Monitors cinematic aspect ratio of 21: 9, for all its virtues, not devoid of unpleasant drawbacks – the image on the edges of the screen is significantly farther from the eye than in the center, plus the angle at which the user is looking at it, also markedly different from the perpendicular. This is especially true for models with maximum currently 34 inches diagonal – so the appearance of these monitors with curved screen surface can only be welcomed. Interestingly, by the way, that Dell did not release the flat model with such characteristics and immediately “went” to the curved – Dell U3415W.

Design – Dell U3415W

In terms of design Dell has been and remains in a good conservative company – look line monitor UltraSharp, though gradually changing over the years, but is still recognizable at first glance; Affiliation Dell U3415W it becomes visible at once – a practical matt plastic business combination of black and silver colors and characteristic stand unequivocally say that in front of us – the new monitor series Dell UltraSharp.

Review curved monitor Dell U3415W

Dell U3415W made in frameless design ( the frame around the image usually is, but the entire front panel is covered with protective glass, because of which the frame becomes noticeable only during operation).

Stand – the standard for Dell Monitors of the new lines, such as we have seen, for example, Dell U2414H and Dell UP2414Q. It is rectangular in shape, relatively small (especially for supporting a screen diagonally) and thin, standing on legs and rubberized non-slip on the table. Fixing the screen to the leg – a reliable and tough to shake the screen can only be the minimum and then only if specifically ask for such a purpose; in normal use – when you adjust its position, or menu navigation – the screen is almost swinging.

All connections are located in a special niche (which can be covered by a special cover) and are oriented downward. Here you can find 2 ports HDMI (one of which is combined with MHL), 2-port DisplayPort – a full-size and mini, DP-output (for connecting to multiple monitors “chain”), in the form of audio minijack and 2 USB-hub with four ports USB 3.0.

Traditionally, U-line, here there is the ability to adjust the angle of the screen height, and rotation about its axis; is to be expected that in such proportions (and the curvature of the screen) transfer to portrait mode at Dell U3415W not. Under mounting feet to the screen hides a VESA-compliant mount (100×100 mm) for mounting the display on the wall.

Menu – Dell U3415W

Control keys from Dell U3415W – sensor located on the front panel on the right, next to a touch button, and marked inconspicuous gray dots without any notation. If you touch any of them there quick menu containing two programmable points (default they are assigned adjusting the volume and variety of video input), and the main menu.

In the first section of the main menu is “Brightness / Contrast”, then “Input Source” (believe in explanations of these items do not need). Next on the list is “color” – here you can choose the color format (RGB / YPbPr), range (PC / Mac, ie 2.2 / 1.8) and one of the preset video modes (Standard, Multimedia, Movie, etc. ).

In the section “Display” you can select the screen size, adjust the sharpness, dynamic contrast enable (not available in all modes), and include use overdrive to compensate for uneven illumination (hiding in paragraph titled – Features of localization, as in English version of his name correctly, Uniformity Compensation). The section contains the PBP mode setting “frame-in-frame / frame-close-to-the-scenes” – here you can select the signal sources, the position of the second frame, and change the contrast of one of the frames.

“Selecting USB” allows you to assign two existing USB-hub to two different computers connected to different video inputs in “Audio” allows you to select the audio source and adjust the volume of the built-in speakers (with a capacity of 9 watts each). Section “Power” (which probably should be called “energy saving”) contains a sub-indicator button to turn off the power and USB ports on standby. In “Menu” you can select the interface language, the degree of transparency of the menu and the time to turn it off in the “Personalization” – to reassign two programmable buttons in the quick menu and in the “other” – disable sound pressing and reset all settings to factory defaults .

In work – Dell U3415W

Dell U3415W used 34-inch AH-IPS panel production LG Display – LM340UW2-SSA1 (judging by labeling – is the bent version of the panel used in LG 34UM95). Aspect her 21: 9, the maximum resolution – 3440h1440 points. The density of the pixels in this case is 0.2325 mm – almost the same (0.233 mm) was observed in 27-inch monitor with an aspect ratio of 16: 9 and native resolution of 2560h1440 points.

The technical characteristics of the manufacturer does not indicate the radius of curvature of the screen, however, according to unofficial information, it is 3.8 meters – is slightly different from the range of other curved monitors who visited us at the office. Visually, these data are similar to the truth – “concave” relatively small and seem to face the same or quite a bit larger than the recently reviewed Samsung S27E591C (whose passport this option is 4 meters). When viewed from the crimp from Dell U3415W seems to be more pronounced, but this effect is clearly enhanced by the huge diagonal and cinematic aspect ratio of the screen. In normal use, as practice shows, the user hardly notices that the screen of the monitor – is not flat; rather, it causes no adverse sensations, but a positive effect on the edges of the image are close to the user (which at this diagonally spaced about 80 cm apart), there is even. At this size, the screen image on a flat surface starts subjectively distorted – the central part of the much closer to the eyes, and, therefore, seems the most periphery – further, and look at it falls is not at a right angle; as a result the user begins to seem that the image is slightly convex, and it is this effect and compensates for the concave surface of the Dell U3415W. Note that is not fully compensated, since the radius of curvature of the screen is much more typical of the distance from the head to the monitor, but the picture on a curved screen, perhaps, already will suffer from distortion.

Review curved monitor Dell U3415W

The claimed response time of the monitor – 5 ms (GtG) in the overclocked mode, and 8 ms (GtG) – in the ordinary, which is the standard values for modern IPS-matrix. The test shows that even with off overdrive in lubricate moving objects are quite weak; when the acceleration they are reduced, but there are subtle artifacts.

Dell U3415W used semi-matte screen coating. It looks like a normal matte at a right angle but gradually becomes glossy with increasing viewing angle. This coating allows almost completely get rid of the parasitic glare and reflections, while the image does not suffer from the effect of the crystal caused by conventional anti-glare matte display (looks like a light grainy on plain areas of the image), which can be seen in close-up shot.

To adjust the brightness, apparently, in this model is not used PWM (or flicker frequency so high that define it “by eye” is not possible). The minimum brightness at the same time was an impressive 15 cd / m² – this is the minimum value of all the monitors we tested; at this brightness for him, you can work comfortably even in complete darkness.

Maximum (average of measurements of 35 points on the screen) – 280 cd / m², and the difference between the brightest portion (center) and the least bright (top right corner) amounted to nearly 100 cd / m². This is a rather large figure, but it is expected – given the size of the screen and used the edge backlighting. In this model, there is a mode to compensate for uneven illumination – when activated disables the ability to adjust the brightness, while this parameter is set at 173 cd / m². The difference in brightness in this mode is less than 10 cd / m² (with a larger area of the screen, it is generally in the range of 2-3 cd / m², and only in the lower part of the brightness rises slightly above, up to 180 cd / m²).

Viewing angles – typical IPS very large; rejecting towards slightly reduced brightness and a little bit – the contrast. Some tangible discoloration is observed, even at extreme viewing angles.

Leak backlight noticeable in the corners (considering the size of the screen and used the edge W-LED backlight, it is not surprising), but it is quite moderate and normal operation is imperceptible.

Glow-effect of moderate severity, when viewed from above at different angles on a black background appears, or silver, or purple glow – again, typical behavior of modern IPS.

This model is factory calibration mode “Standard”, which is confirmed by the results of the tests: average deltaE value is just 0.24 (at a rate of 1.0), the maximum – 1.1 (at a rate of 3.0). This is a great indicator showing that the monitor can be used for serious work with photos, even without additional adjustments and calibration.

Review curved monitor Dell U3415W

In Example, Dell U3415W becomes clear what should actually be the monitors aspect ratio 21: 9 – with great diagonal high resolution and the curved surface of the screen. Diagonal 34 inches eliminates the main disadvantage of this format – a relatively small height of the image (which have 29-inch models is comparable to that of conventional large-format monitors with a diagonal of about 23-24 inches). Resolution 3440h1440 points can be used as an effective Dell U3415W replace two-monitor configuration, since the effective area of the screen is comparable to its two monitors with a diagonal of about 20 inches, and “half” permit (1720h1440 points) is enough for any office application. Curved screen for a diagonally – not exotic and not an element of “wow factor” to attract the attention of buyers, and a real need, which significantly improves the perception of the information located on the periphery – in this case no discomfort, even at the beginning, this does not create a bend . We should also mention the factory calibration (report with the results of measurements attached to each monitor model), through which he demonstrates excellent image quality and high color accuracy. Among other, not significant but nevertheless nice feature of this model is the absence of flicker of illumination, which reduces eye fatigue after prolonged use, and having a USB-hub to simultaneously connect to two different PC.

Liked – Dell U3415W

+ Excellent image quality
+ Factory calibration mode “Standard”
+ A huge diagonal and high definition
+ Compensation of uneven illumination
+ More comfortable perception of information along the edges of the screen thanks to the curved surface

Do not like – Dell U3415W

– Special shortcomings have been identified

Samsung will bring to Las Vegas at CES 2015 a whole range of curved monitors, as well as special LCD panels for use in restaurants, hotels, offices. However, while the Korean vendor disclose information only about one model – the flagship Samsung SE790C.

Samsung SE790C – curved computer monitor with an aspect ratio of 21: 9. It will be available and the modification with a diagonal 29 and 34 inches. It is known that a major modification was the display with a resolution of 3440 x 1440 pixels. The level of static contrast ratio reaches 3000: 1, Brightness – 300 cd / m2 and viewing angles horizontally and vertically – 178 degrees.

Among other things mentioning features Picture-by-Picture (PbP) and Picture-in-Picture (PiP) 2.0. The first allows you to connect to the monitor, the two devices – for example, a computer and Xbox One or notebook computer and network player – and display images with them in parallel (good display area allows). Thanks to the second option, the monitor can display a picture from the second device in a separate window.

CES 2015. The line curved LCD Monitor Samsung

We also know that Samsung SE790C has four USB 3.0 ports with fast charging external devices and a pair of 7-watt speakers.

Add that Samsung is also preparing a similar type monitor SE590C, who will receive the display with a diagonal of 32 inches. Moreover, on the way to the counters are a few more curved monitors that “will make a massive form factor” (read – will cost money sane). About them very little is known: SE510C model will be offered in versions with a diagonal of 24 and 27 inches, and 27-inch TD590C can act including as a TV.

4K-TVs were one of the main trends of CES 2014. However, such a resolution “threatens” not only TVs, but computer monitors – there was announced several relatively affordable models (under $ 1000). However, the “first sign”, 31.5-inch ASUS PQ321QE, is already available for sale and visited our lab.

Design

The monitor is made in strict representative design, without any “frills” like metal inserts, gloss, etc. – Straight lines, black matte plastic and discreet silver paste in the stand.

Monitor stands at an impressive stand, attached to it the same thorough “foot” – the total weight is 13 kg lot, and have to display “only” 8 kg, 5 kg of others – and it’s stand leg. The compound is very tough to shake any noticeable screen fails. Allows you to adjust the height of the leg, change the angle of the screen and rotate around the vertical axis (translation in portrait mode is not).

Of the video inputs is present here only one DisplayPort (visible on the body cap under HDMI, but the port itself is not). And there are also a line input and headphone output, and, curiously, the location of connectors rather “television” than “monitor” – they are on the left side and directed horizontally, because of what can be seen attached cables.

review-4k-monitor-asus-pq321qe-raqwe.com-03

Frame around the image of the average width of the order of 2 cm on it at the bottom you can find logos DisplayPort and ASUS, as well as in the lower right corner of the activity indicator, glowing dim green light.

Menu

Menu control buttons are located not in the usual way, and again resemble on TV than a computer monitor. They are right at the top, behind the bezel, with no notation on the frame itself is not – signature found on the rear panel behind the buttons so that the user will have to remember the location of buttons and adjust the monitor “blindly”. By the way, the power button is located here (top row in the control buttons), ie, at a distance of several tens of centimeters from the activity indicator. Buttons tight, pressed with a visible effort, while the menu is located on the other side of the screen closer to the left, so that navigation on it is not very comfortable. Without calling the menu by pressing can adjust the brightness and volume of the integrated speakers.

Menu in the ASUS PQ321QE radically different from the traditional menu that we saw in all ASUS models in recent years. It is surprisingly large and well more like a television than a “monitor.”

In paragraph Picture You can adjust brightness, contrast, black level, color, sharpness, select one of the preset modes (sRGB, Standard and Vivid), specify the color temperature (in the range of 3000-10000K) and range (1.8-2.4 or Standard), and also reset all settings to factory defaults. In the Setup menu, you can change the language, select the source and the audio level, and switch mode DisplayPort (on this a little more then we will stop). In the Monitor section, there is only two options – to switch between portrait and landscape modes, and off when it is idle. And the last section, Others provides access to configure the aspect ratio of the monitor, and the possibility to disable the audio information page about the parameters work.

Matrix

In ASUS PQ321QE used ASV-matrix (Advanced Super View) production Sharp diagonal 31.5 “, 16:9 aspect ratio and claimed 8ms response time (GtG). At the heart of this panel is the technology of VA, plus used transistors manufacturing technology IGZO, which allows to significantly increase the pixel density compared to conventional monitors. So, at a resolution 3840h2160 pixels pixel size of 0.182 mm – in computer time is an unprecedented rate (eg, 27-inch monitor with a resolution of 2560×1440 pixels pixel size of 0.233 mm, and this is hardly the most “tiny” pixel of public models). However, in comparison with modern smartphone or tablet, this figure is not so impressive – the ASUS PQ321QE PPI value equals 140, while, say, the iPad Air – 264. However, consider the pixel ASUS PQ321QE can have (and then only with great difficulty) only from a distance, where the user typically holds a smartphone – at a distance of half a meter further, ie with the usual distance at which the work is for a desktop computer, see the individual pixels will only be with very sharp vision.

4K resolution

Subjective feeling of using a 4K-diagonal monitor for a few days – a few mixed. Immediately it should be noted that for this it is strongly recommended to upgrade to Windows 8.1, Microsoft since it introduced a number of improvements in the work of the monitors at high resolution. And even though the result is still imperfect, but overall impression is much more favorable than when connecting this monitor to your system with Windows 7 – so, in 8.1, it suffices to set the parameter “resize all elements of” 150%, and for the most part this installation will be practiced correctly, not only in the “native” applications Microsoft, but also third-party software.

Plus, in some cases, if a particular application fonts appear blurry need for each specific program to set its properties tick the option “Turn off image scaling at high screen resolution.”

review-4k-monitor-asus-pq321qe-raqwe.com-05

After that display problems are only in applications that use non-standard interfaces, which have not been optimized for the high resolution – the only way out of this situation is, unfortunately, or switching to a lower resolution or replacement applications on their analogs that are correctly displayed on This monitor.

In other words, to work in Windows, this monitor has no special advantages over the much more affordable options like 27-inch models with a resolution of 2560×1440 pixels. But the picture changes dramatically when viewing photos and 4K-video – suffice it to say that the photos displayed on this screen virtually “pixel by pixel” that not only looks impressive, but also greatly facilitates their processing in image editor. If we talk about the video, it explains a lot here a screenshot of the desktop window with a small video player, which at 100% normal playing FullHD-video – on the area it is 4 times smaller than the screen, and when you open the full screen looks like it’s actually DVD-Video.

Now find content in 4K still problematic – in fact, all his “diversity” still comes down to advertising trailer manufacturers 4K-TVs and camcorders. And they monitor all the advantages disclosed in full – sometimes it seems as if you look out the window, looks so realistic picture shows them. It remains to wait for 4K will be available in conventional movies / series, and not just commercials (although there is certainly another problem pops up – the size of files, for example, a two-minute trailer with 4K-bit-rate video in 120 + Mbit / s can be the “pull” 2 GB).

In games again ambiguous. On the one hand, at this resolution the picture is very clear, and with a pixel density of 140 PPI, as it turned out, completely eliminating the need for FSAA – even when anti-aliasing is turned off to see in the “ladder” is almost impossible. On the other hand, rests on the predictable performance – even on a powerful gaming PC, you can forget about the maximum settings, because FPS rate drops below the playability. So, on a test system (Windows 8.1 x64, Intel Core [email protected] GHz, 8 GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780) Metro: Last Light at maximum settings showed 11 FPS, at the minimum – 52 FPS (though it is fair to Note that at the minimum game looks almost the same as at maximum). Much less demanding Resident Evil 6 at maximum graphics issued 4664 points (FPS hovered around 25-30 frames / sec, which is not enough for a comfortable game).

In this paper,

Connecting ASUS PQ321QE is slightly more complicated than a conventional monitor – the default resolution 3840h2160 points refresh rate is set at 30 Hz, and to get a more acceptable 60 Hz have to do any additional configuration. It includes a mode switching mode DisplayPort with SST (single-stream transport) to MST (multi-stream transport), resulting in a system monitor appears as two virtual display. What happens next depends on the graphics card (with the exception of products NVIDIA – its drivers themselves determine the new configuration and include the correct mode 3840h2160 @ 60 Hz). ASUS has even published a special video instructions detailing the procedure.

Monitored used semi-matte screen coating, which is characterized by the almost complete absence of crystalline effect observed in conventional matte displays (slight graininess monochrome image areas), wherein unwanted reflections in the environment therein is also substantially less (at least in the normal operating mode, with deviation in the direction of reflection appear more clearly, and the maximum angle of the surface turns almost normal glossy).

Although the description of IGZO technology and says that it can significantly reduce the time delay between switching states of pixels in the characteristics of the monitor, as mentioned above, it is stated quite slow response time – 8 ms (GtG), which is quite comparable with conventional IPS monitors. The Monitor uses a proprietary technology overdrive TraceFree, but there is no possibility of its settings. Judging by the results of tests (almost missing artifacts overdrive and relatively noticeable lubrication), used “gentle” mode TraceFree, which is the default setting in the other monitors ASUS, where the user is allowed to adjust this parameter. In daily work any inconvenience this caused no response time, ASUS PQ321QE in this respect the feelings did not differ from the usual models for IPS-panels.

Viewing angles of this monitor are very good, some tangible discoloration is not observed even at maximum deviation – markedly reduced brightness, much weaker – contrast, plus a few “warmer” image.

This model is used to adjust the brightness using PWM, so that flickering illumination is present here, and in full – the flicker frequency is clearly not very high, so people with sensitive eyes may experience discomfort during prolonged work at such a monitor.

Uniformity of illumination is very high, especially for such a diagonal. Only in the upper part of the screen in two places noticeable backlight leakage weak in general, the picture looks very good.

Glow-in ASUS PQ321QE effect is virtually absent – when viewed at an angle from above appears very faint purple glow, the same as the right and left.

review-4k-monitor-asus-pq321qe-raqwe.com-02

Minimum brightness of this model is decent enough – 53 cd / m ². That will be quite enough for comfortable work in the shadows, but in the dark for some users, this monitor may still seem yarkovatym. Maximum brightness is turned all of the highest we’ve seen so far models – 370 cd / m ² (average value from measurements in 35 points). Difference in brightness between the different areas of the screen at the same time was also great – as much as 125 cd / m ², due, apparently, wide screen display.

SRGB mode allows a user to change the brightness and contrast settings (which does not occur very often). According to the results of tests show that the gamma value, and color temperature in this mode almost perfectly correspond to the standard values, but the color gamut is not as good as expected – it covers 92.7% sRGB, and clearly visible “shortage” in blue and red . Transmission accuracy is good, but not perfect (maximum deltaE exceed 3), demanding user for serious work with this photo mode still does not fit, require calibration.

In Standard mode, additional adjustments are available, such as the choice of color temperature and gamma values. When set to the default gamma (STD), we see a curve with a peak in the dark areas and light failure – it gives deep black shadows and good elaboration of detail in bright areas, but at the same time it means a loss of detail in shadows and pale expressionless light areas of the photo – if you are not satisfied with the settings, you can switch to 2.2 range, resulting in her chart, we get almost flat line, similar to what we saw in the mode sRGB. Color gamut is also virtually identical to the regime and is 92.5% sRGB. Interestingly, in Standard mode color accuracy is somewhat higher than in sRGB.

And the last mode, Vivid, characterized by more pronounced gamma curve (with a peak at 2.7 and a minimum of – 1.6, with a standard value of 2.2) and a slightly larger gamut – it is 93.1% sRGB.

After calibration, color gamut was 92.1% sRGB, the color accuracy has become much higher, and gamma curve and color temperature, which in the past were very good, now almost perfectly correspond to the default settings.

ASUS PQ321QE difficult to assess in terms of regular monitor – at a cost of more than 30 thousand UAH. him, to put it mildly, difficult to find the scope of which would justify such costs. This is pure proof of concept, proof that such a thing is possible that the Ultra HD in modern desktops – no longer science fiction, and even very expensive, but a reality. In this sense, the monitor is very good, though not without its flaws – a very high-quality image (albeit with incomplete coverage of sRGB), excellent viewing angles and constant “wah” in others when viewing advertising 4K-trailers.

Making forecasts – it is certainly a thankless, but one can assume that the cost of such models in the future drops significantly, but in the category of public, they still will not pass – as are not accessible to the general public “normal” monitors with a diagonal of 30 “(Price which is now in Ukraine vary in the range of 10-20 ths.). But the arrival of 4K to more suitable for home use diagonal (in the first place – 27-28 inches) looks very attractive – at least as early as this year at CES 2014 were announced the first 28-inch “swallows” on TN-matrices with a price tag of $ 700-800, and there is every reason to believe that in the next year or two will and better panels from other manufacturers for the same, and even lower prices. thing for a little – to convince developers of software for Windows that Retina support is important not only in Mac OS …

Touchscreen Monitors – thing is still rare, despite the fact that the latest operating system from Microsoft, Windows 8 is optimized for touch control. Besides, most of these models is based on the TN-matrices, which generally can not boast of high quality images. It is gratifying that this “rule” there are exceptions – for example, Dell S2240T, VA-based matrix.

Design

Outwardly, this monitor is a bit like a giant tablet support – “streamlined” body of black matte plastic, the back panel slightly convex, with the possibility of wall mounting (VESA 100×100, access to the connectors necessary to remove the stand.)

Dell_S2240T_raqwe.com-02

Connectors facing downwards and do not interfere with such an option using the monitor. There is an element of the video inputs VGA, DVI-D and HDMI, also located here, and audio line out port USB 2.0 (for touch input).

Around the screen – a typical “flatbed” frame a couple of inches wide, of which there is only a legend logo Dell. The frame is not relief, is integral with the touchpad that is very convenient. Activity indicator is located opposite the power button, and glows with white light, not distracting during operation.

Metal stand, ʌ-shaped. Front “leg” fixed rigidly, can be shifted back and change back so the screen angle, with a very wide range – up to 60 °. Both feet are rubberized, so spontaneous “razezzhanie” excluded – to “put” the monitor on the table, you need to make some effort, but a return to the traditional state is very easy, you just pull the top edge of the display.

Menu

Menu control buttons are located on the right side, they do not touch, and hardware and frankly tight. Traditionally, Dell, no symbols on them or near them there, and when you click on any of them on the screen in front of them there is a quick menu with access to two arbitrary functions (the default switch video modes and adjust the brightness / contrast, but their value can be changed in the settings) and the main menu.

The menu here – familiar to any user of products Dell. First item is the brightness / contrast, then – point auto-tuning available with analog connection and the video input selection. In the Color Settings, you can specify the input format (RGB or YPbPr), select one of the display modes (Standard, Multimedia, Movie, etc.) and include an “improvement” of the picture. Also, depending on the mode selected, there may be added the Hue and Saturation. In the Display Settings via a digital connection is available only to switch aspect ratio and sharpness adjustment, as well as enable / disable dynamic contrast (not available for all video modes).

Dell_S2240T_raqwe.com-03

In the “other settings” you can select the menu language (no Ukrainian or Russian) and configure other settings OSD (transparency, time off, etc.). There is also a possibility reset all settings to their factory defaults.

And in the last menu item, Personalize, the user can edit the structure of the quick menu by assigning two programmable points of the other values.

In this paper,

In Dell S2240T used VA-matrix diagonal 21.5 “16:9 aspect ratio and a maximum resolution of 1920×1080 (FullHD), point size in this case is 0.248 mm.

Stated response time is large enough – 12 ms, which is not surprising for VA-matrix. No overdrive settings menu could not be found, according to the tests, light compensation response time there still is used, but notice artifacts acceleration is virtually impossible.

Floor display is glossy, but, unfortunately, the main advantages of this type of screen is not here – Dell S2240T has a pronounced crystalline effect noticeable in almost any monophonic site.

Perhaps this effect is protective glass, but the fact remains – the users for which this parameter is critical, this monitor is unlikely to fit.

In this model the projection-capacitive touch input system, which supports up to 10 simultaneous touches, claimed response time – 25 ms. As expected from this technology, responsive management, in terms of subjective feelings does not differ from the control tablet or smartphone (adjusted for the size of the screen, of course). As mentioned above, the frame around the image is made integrally with the protective glass, so the problems with access to the edges of the image (faced by users of touch screens with embossed frames) is not here. Branded “swipe” from the edges of the screen in Windows 8 also performed basic, no failures or false positives were noted.

In terms of viewing angles Dell S2240T looks good, though inferior to what we have seen in the latest models on a matrix AMVA +. Large-angle picture fades, brighten dark areas and lose depth, but in normal mode it discreetly – on the contrary, because of the glossy screen picture seems saturation and contrast. Color irregularity moderate – much weaker and those that can be seen on TN-matrices, and those that were on the VA a couple of years ago. Thus, the image is noticeably warmer and dims (white color starts yellow, yellow “out” in the direction of pink, etc.), but even at the maximum deviation of the picture as a whole retains its properties.

Dell_S2240T_raqwe.com-04

To adjust the brightness of the monitor uses a PWM so that the backlight flickering here and there is clearly evident in the “pencil test.” Will it affect the eye fatigue – individual issue (in my case, no adverse effects were not, unlike some other monitors with PWM), but to consider it before buying in any case it is necessary.

Uniformity of illumination on the whole good, though inferior to what we have seen in the last AMVA + models. On the other hand, it is at least not worse than they can “brag” IPS-cost monitors.

Glow-effect here is moderate, when viewed diagonally from above appears relatively weak gray “tide”, and the same shade as seen from the right and left.

Minimum brightness of this model is 35 cd / m ², which is a very good result and allows you to work comfortably behind the monitor even in complete darkness. Maximum brightness (average value measured in the 35 points) was at the level of 235 cd / m ², with the difference between the least bright portion (center top of the screen), and the most striking (center) was 55 cd / m ².

In the Standard (which, most likely, and will be used in most cases) we observe the color temperature, almost perfectly with the standard 6500K, and significantly underestimated range, which makes the picture somewhat faded, especially in dark areas (bright gamma increases almost up to the standard 2.2). Color coverage was 96.9% sRGB, color accuracy was good as well – the maximum value was 3.06 deltaE that more than acceptable for a home system.

Gamma curve on a scale of brightness, color gamut, color temperature chart and color accuracy mode (Standard).

Other modes are distinguished by different color temperature settings, brightness and sharpness of the image, in addition, in some cases included dynamic contrast – for example, in Movie mode is activated option “improved picture” and a dynamic contrast, sharpness is set to maximum, and the color temperature is frankly cold ( ~ 8000K). By the way, if Standard mode seems too pale, and color accuracy while not particularly critical, you can switch to Multimedia – it offers a slightly lower temperature range and, closer to the standard, but the color gamut was only 89% sRGB, but in terms of color accuracy all much worse – the average deviation of 3.3 and 8.5 do not allow maximum advise this mode for tasks involving any serious work with color. However, as evidenced by the very name of the regime – Multimedia.

Used for calibration mode Custom Color, you can manually adjust the primary colors. After this procedure, the color coverage was 98.4% sRGB, the color accuracy of any serious improve (compared with the mode Standard) failed, but the value of gamma and color temperature became almost perfectly correspond to the standard values.

Color accuracy, gamma curve on a scale of brightness, color temperature chart and color gamut (Mode Custom Color, after calibration)

Results

Dell S2240T approach from the standpoint of conventional monitor is not quite right – the main thing it’s still a touch-sensitive controls, and here he looks pretty decent. Touch-sensitive screen on sensations here is no different from the tablet and has substantially the same degree of responsiveness and speed of reaction. It is gratifying that in this case, and the image quality will not disappoint – though inferior to monitor a number of parameters IPS-models (primarily, of course, the viewing angles), but is head and shoulders above most other touch screens. Carp, by and large, in this case can only be to use PWM and a marked effect of the crystal.

27-inch IPS-monitors with a resolution of FullHD – perhaps the easiest and most affordable way to get the long diagonal with a quality image. The only significant drawback of any such model is the relatively low resolution – however, in practice, it is critical not for all home users. One of the new models in this category is the AOC I2769VM, the average price of which, currently stands at less than 3000 USD.

Design

AOC I2769VM made in the familiar “frameless” design. Again, the frame around the image there – about 1 cm, just can not see it in the off position.

review-monitor-aoc-i2769vm-raqwe.com-02

review-monitor-aoc-i2769vm-raqwe.com-03review-monitor-aoc-i2769vm-raqwe.com-04

The case is quite thin, made of black plastic. The back side as it is divided into two parts: a very thin (about one and a half inches) top – glossy, and more “fat” bottom, it contains the entire electronics – coated simulating brushed metal.

review-monitor-aoc-i2769vm-raqwe.com-05

The side edges of the monitor glossy, the lower part of the screen visually supported by a wide (3 cm) plastic strap silver “aluminum”. It is located in the center of the company’s logo, and on the right are subtle symbols are opposite on the bottom of the menu buttons. Activity indicator is dimly green TT and orange – in standby mode.

Stand round, relatively small, the top is made of silver plastic in the color bar below the screen, the bottom – of black matte plastic. As for such a diagonal square coasters could be and more – the monitor is not very stable, and pressing the menu button it may well shake.

review-monitor-aoc-i2769vm-raqwe.com-06

The display is attached to the stand stiff leg, which allows changing only the angle of the screen – no height adjustment or rotation around its axis, or switch to portrait mode, this model no.

review-monitor-aoc-i2769vm-raqwe.com-07

The monitor supports wall mount (VESA 100×100), but all the connectors are located in the horizontal plane, so that the plug cables will hinder this option the display location (it will either be fixed at a certain distance from the wall, either in advance to think through a special groove in it for cable) . From here there are two video input port HDMI (one of them is combined with MHL), DisplayPort and VGA (DVI available).

review-monitor-aoc-i2769vm-raqwe.com-08

Menu

The display hardware buttons are disposed on the bottom on the right side of the display. Symbols in front of them barely visible in the dim and the background lighting is almost imperceptible. Note that the neighborhood of the power button to the menu button (located at a distance of 1 cm from each other), and no obvious differences from one another (as in the labeling, and in the form) causes the user to miss every now and then, and instead of calling off the menu screen. Perhaps the problem could be solved by placing the power light just above the power button, but it is away from it, so that the focus of the indicator does not turn out well.

review-monitor-aoc-i2769vm-raqwe.com-09

Without the menu functions available fast – video input switching on / off of corporate regime Clear Vision and volume control built-in speakers.

The menu is a large horizontal strip of icons, the choice of a partition below it shows a set of relevant items. By default, it is attached to the bottom of the screen, but can be moved to any other area. For transitions between paragraphs is used smooth animation, it looks nice from the outside, but significantly slows down the real configuration.

review-monitor-aoc-i2769vm-raqwe.com-10review-monitor-aoc-i2769vm-raqwe.com-11review-monitor-aoc-i2769vm-raqwe.com-12review-monitor-aoc-i2769vm-raqwe.com-13

Available language interface, but the quality of the localization is poor – many of the names shortened so that the appointment of a number of items can only guess (for example, the meaning of “Recall. On first.” Can be understood only by switching to English and seeing instead Break Reminder – “reminder of a break”).

The first item is “Brightness”, where you can adjust the brightness / contrast, select one of the “economy” mode (with the brightness and contrast settings are hard-coded and can not be changed by the user, and the only mode of “Economy”, in which these parameters are allowed to Handling – “Standard”). You can also select one of three modes range (numerical value from them, unfortunately, is not specified), engage the dynamic brightness (which blocks all other settings), choose the amount of overdrive and turn on “Dyn. Exercise. power. “(apparently, the dynamic energy saving).

In the next menu “Settings. Picture. “, You can adjust the settings for the analog connection (using HDMI and DisplayPort this item is not available).

In “Nastr.tsv.” You can adjust the color temperature (select one of the preset modes or manually adjust the primary colors) – it is curious that in each mode, the independent adjustment of brightness / contrast. You could also engage the DCB, select one of the presets “image enhancement” – “in all respects”, “skin improvement,” etc.

The item “Adjust. Picture. “Offers the possibility of local changes in brightness / contrast – the user specifies the size and position of the window in which to operate their own picture settings that are different from the rest of the screen. It is difficult to imagine to what the real situation warrants it, but in any case, the availability of this option certainly would not want.

In the setup menu, you can select the language, the transparency of the window and its position on the screen, and in the additional settings – select the video input mode, the timer will turn off the monitor, and several other parameters, including the reset all settings to their factory defaults.

In

In AOC I2769VM use a 27-inch AH-IPS panel production LG Display. Aspect ratio 16:9 it, the native resolution – 1920×1080 pixels (FullHD), 0.311 mm dot pitch, a claimed response time – 5 ms.

As you can see, the size of the point krupnovat that users will love, who do not like to look into the small print (or players who do not have a powerful graphics card capable of coping with a resolution of 2560×1440 pixels), but can not arrange those people who are used to seeing solid image, do not break up into individual pixels, or just want to put as much information on the screen.

Like other “frameless” displays, at AOC I2769VM matte finish screen, so that the crystalline effect observed here, however, he expressed relatively weak (and partially “overlap” low index PPI). Viewing angles are typical for IPS-monitor on wide angle brightness decreases significantly enough, especially in the horizontal deflection. In the event of a horizontal picture so slightly warmer in the vertical – on the contrary, gets a cold tone.

review-monitor-aoc-i2769vm-raqwe.com-14review-monitor-aoc-i2769vm-raqwe.com-15

In this model, in order to reduce the reaction time used overdrive matrix having three degrees of “acceleration”, and the ability to blackout. Weak value does not differ from the lack of acceleration of the matrix, but the artifacts and here you can really see that in the pictures in a special test. The value of medium gives a slight decrease due to the appearance of blurring slightly distinguishable artifacts, and at maximum acceleration clarity of moving objects is high, but the artifacts are already fairly well marked (though not as much as we’ve seen in other monitors).

review-monitor-aoc-i2769vm-raqwe.com-16review-monitor-aoc-i2769vm-raqwe.com-17

This model is used to adjust the brightness of the pulse-width modulation, so that the flickering lights, unfortunately, present, and quite tangible – it can be frustrating for people with sensitive eyes, as it can cause eye fatigue shortly after the operation of the monitor. With the “pencil test” flickering stops at the value determined by the brightness around 80%, which is about 200 cd / m ² – this is a fairly high value, and to work with such a comfortable brightness will unless under strong ambient light.

Average uniformity of illumination on a black background in a dark room can clearly see a bright spot in the lower left corner, in addition, on the top of the right and at the bottom – in the center, visible light illumination leak.

Glow-in effect AOC I2769VM fairly typical for monitors in this matrix – when you look at the image diagonally on the right appears a distinct purple light up on the left – a low-grade brown.

review-monitor-aoc-i2769vm-raqwe.com-18review-monitor-aoc-i2769vm-raqwe.com-19review-monitor-aoc-i2769vm-raqwe.com-20

The minimum brightness level of the monitor was 64 cd / m ² – this is enough for comfortable operation in low ambient light, but to work in complete darkness so bright after all it may be a bit too much. Maximum same brightness in the monitor was on the level of 210 cd / m ² (average of the results of measurements at 35 points), the difference between the brightest (bottom left) and least bright areas (upper right corner) was as much as 80 cd / m ², which very much even for monitors with LED-backlit.

We tested the effect of the basic settings of the monitor to Eco Mode “standard” (the only one to adjust brightness / contrast). Surprisingly, the three gamma values are not just a “low / medium / high” – “gamma 1” gives almost equal direct around 1.95 (which is much lower than the standard value of 2.2), “gamma 2” turns the curve gradually declining, with an average value of about 1.88, and the “gamma 3” gives an S-shaped curve with a maximum in the dark area (almost reaching the standard) and a minimum – in a light, where it falls to the frankly low 1.6. This setup has a little more contrast picture than the “gamma 1” (mainly due to the deeper shadows), but with faded light areas. As a result, if the calibration of the monitor is not supposed to, we would recommend to choose between the first and third mode, by his own taste – in both cases, the image will be somewhat faded, but with different nuances. It is interesting that when you switch range also changes the color temperature – when this parameter is set to Normal picture was a little chilly, and the average temperature was 7000K, but all three gamma values schedule was different every time (again, it was the most linear in mode “gamma 1”).

Color temperature, we would recommend to use the Warm mode or sRGB – in both cases is almost identical to the plot turns and the maximum value corresponding to the standard 6500K.

Even without calibrating the monitor shows a sufficiently high color rendering – the average deltaE was 1.02, the maximum – 2.58 (note that about the same parameters some manufacturers in the characteristics of the models that pass the factory calibration). During the calibration to achieve more accurate color reproduction, unfortunately, not possible, but the values of gamma and color temperature, of course, are much better match the default settings.

The results

AOC I2769VM – a good option, “a large monitor for a reasonable price.” IPS-matrix shows good color “out of the box” in terms of design display also looks quite impressive. Of course, for that kind of money is difficult to count on WQHD-resolution, however, and the usual FullHD in this case looks quite decent. To find fault with this model primarily to flickering lights, as well as to the fact that to get a standard gamma value without calibration, using only the settings in the OSD menu on the monitor, the user will not work.
